Dashrath Manjhi's remarkable and inspiring story
Dashrath Manjhi's remarkable and inspiring story is one of determination, perseverance, and the unwavering human spirit. He was born into the lowest caste in India, and life led him to work in coal mines. However, his life took a significant turn when a tragic event occurred – his wife was severely injured and passed away because the nearest doctor was a daunting 34 miles away from their village in Gehlaur.
This devastating loss and the immense hardship he faced because of it drove Manjhi to embark on an extraordinary mission. He made it his life's goal to create a new pathway through a formidable ridge of hills that separated his village from the outside world. His vision was to make access to medical help and essential resources more feasible for his community.
With an unwavering determination that knew no bounds, Manjhi began the monumental task of carving a path through the rocky terrain. Armed with only a hammer and a chisel, he toiled relentlessly for 22 long years, from 1960 to 1982, tirelessly chipping away at the mountain that stood in his way.
The incredible result of his labor was a 110-meter-long road that snaked through the hills, connecting his village to the other side. Manjhi's monumental effort drastically reduced the distance between his village and the vital resources they needed, cutting it down from an arduous 34 miles to just 9.3 miles.
